The 2017 Business Plan Competition

How would you innovatively invest $100 million in European real estate? You are working for a real estate investment firm and have been given $100 million in cash to invest in real estate within Europe. The Board of the firm has asked you to recommend an investment theme and develop a business plan in which you seek to maximize risk-adjusted returns. Conditions of the investment:

  • You must fully invest the cash within a one-year timeframe
  • You must realize a minimum of 2.0x multiple on equity within a seven-year timeframe, assuming an appropriate degree of risk (a marginally higher or lower return is acceptable, provided the return adequately compensates for the risk assumed)
  • You may invest in any geography and sector and via any instrument (public or private, debt or equity): themes that are especially novel will be awarded extra merit, provided these are executable
  • You may leverage the equity by raising debt but should address in your business plan the incremental risks and cost of doing so
  • Your presentation will include why entry pricing is sensible, ways in which you will add value throughout the hold period, strategic risks and how these are mitigated, and how you will exit the investment
  • Your presentation will include both a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the opportunity

  • £1,000 and the opportunity to present the presentation at the conference

  • Entrants will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at the University of Oxford as of the date of the OxRES 2017 conference (March 1st, 2017)
  • Part-time students are eligible to enter
  • Team entries are permitted. Maximum of 4 members per team
  • Each entrant (and all members of any team) will be available to attend the OxRES 2017 conference
